Urbanization is one of the major challenges cities are facing today. Half of humanity lives already in cities and by 2030 it is predicted that almost 60% of the world’s population live in urban areas. Consequently, the world’s resources are being stretched.


Stora Enso’s products contribute to a low-carbon circular economy, in which materials are reused and recycled, while waste is minimised, to maximise environmental, social, and financial added value.

Building blocks of the future

Massive wooden materials like Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) play an essential role in building sustainable urban areas for the future. As an alternative to steel and concrete, wooden buildings and components store carbon during their lifetime. They can also help reduce carbon emissions in production and transport.


Building with high-performance, precision engineered wood materials or pre-fabricated elements allow you to push beyond wood’s perceived boundaries: achieve longer spans and new building heights while also reduce construction time, site waste and noise.


CLT, consisting of bonded single-layer panels arranged at right angles to one another, is produced in two Austrian factories with dimensions of up to 2.95 × 16 m. Stora Enso is also investing in a new CLT production unit in Sweden. The investment will further enhance Stora Enso’s position as a global provider of high-quality engineered wooden elements and as a market leader in CLT.


LVL, produced in Finland, is engineered to be relatively stronger than steel, yet lighter than concrete. Consisting of 3 mm veneers glued together, this homogeneous massive wood product harnesses the power of Nordic spruce. LVL panels can measure up to 2.5 m x 24 m.

Simplifying building in wood

At Stora Enso, we are initiating a better network in the industry, creating an ecosystem that includes architects, designers, construction companies, city government officials and engineers, to mention a few.


We are also developing our service offering and providing digital tools that help building professionals to increase the usage of wooden pre-fabricated building components. Building Information Modelling (BIM) and digital component library will be essential for the development.

Proofpoints for sustainable building projects

In 2017 Stora Enso delivered 6 300 m3 of CLT to a wooden building project in Växjö, Sweden. This amount of wood will keep more than 4 400 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere for decades to come – the equivalent of emissions from nearly two thousand round-trip flights from Sydney to New York.


Built in 2016, Crome Court, a five to seven-storey student accommodation building on the campus of University of East Anglia, UK, achieved BREEAM Excellent. Stora Enso’s CLT was used for the superstructure for number of reasons: in addition to sustainability benefits, speed and ease of construction were the key factors. Building with CLT enabled the project to be delivered within a very tight 26 month programme, from initial briefing to handover to meet the start of a new academic year - actually 4 weeks ahead of the schedule!


Moholt 50|50, comprising five CLT buildings and meeting the passive house standards, was selected the wooden construction of the year 2016 in Norway. Over 22 000 trees were used to build this project and it would take only 7,1 hours to grow this amount of wood back in the Austrian forest in a summer day. Another great example of bringing wood back to cities.
